Written and directed by Matthew Posey, EX VOTO: THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS OF FRIDA KAHLO (EX VOTO) is a visual and musical feast that explores the troubled life of the famous Mexican Painter, Frida Kahlo.

EX VOTO: THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS OF FRIDA KAHLO, written and directed by Matthew Posey, takes us on vivid journey in the life of Frida Kahlo (ELIZABETH EVANS) through the surreal landscapes of her paintings accompanied by the sounds and music of Mexico (MUSICIANS: JUSTIN LOCKLEAR, DELILAH BRUITRON, AND STEPHAN GONZALES). EX VOTO centers on Frida’s unique and troubled relationship with Diego Rivera (DANTE MARTINEZ), world-class muralist and painter, Diego’s affair with Frida’s sister, Cristina Kahlo (CYNDEE RIVERA), and the subsequent scandalous affairs that permeated her life.
Frida lived a life of suffering. At the age of seventeen, she was in a trolley accident that left her bed ridden most of her life. She underwent innumerable operations on her lower spine and endured a life of pain as a result. Painting self-portraits and personal events in her life, art was both her therapy and her outlet. These “autobiographical” paintings, which come to life on stage through bunraku puppetry, illustrate both her ability to endure and conquer the issues of her complicated life.
EX VOTO: THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS OF FRIDA KAHLO celebrates this amazing woman who takes pain and turns it into passion, and takes her own deterioration and turns it into something powerful and transformative. Live music, Bunraku puppetry of floating objects, dream-like landscape and vivid images of her paintings creates Frida’s world.

As a result of Diego Rivera’s affair with her sister, Frida has an affair with Trotsky, divorces Diego, and her leg is amputated. After Trotsky’s assassination, Rivera is suspect of killing Trotsky and is incarcerated. Frida re-marries Diego and gets him out of jail.

FRIDA is a surreal dream that takes place in Frida’s bed, while she is delirious and reminisces about her torrid past. Concept puppetry of floating objects, dreamlike landscape and vivid images of her paintings recreated on stage make up her world.
